The Physical Significance of Non-convergent Integrals in Expressions for Effective Transport Properties
نویسنده
چکیده
The idea of assigning effective properties to an inhomogeneous medium, for example a composite material or a suspension of particles in fluid, is well known [4, 9, 14], but some methods used to calculate these effective properties have been sources of controversy over the years. In particular, the appearance of non-convergent integrals (or sums) in several calculational schemes has generated many discussions on the relative merits of the different ways of calculating effective properties. Unfortunately these discussions remain largely unappreciated, with the result that new-comers to the field usually reinterpret for themselves the non-convergence, to the despair of those who have heard it all before. This paper presents a discussion of the significance of the non-convergent integrals which may help new workers understand the existing literature more easily. There is space here for only the briefest descriptions of the original papers, and consequently the details in this article will be intelligible only to those who have read or will read the original papers. For the general reader, the main conclusions of this paper are that

Transport Property Estimation of Non-Uniform Porous Media
In this work a glass micromodel which its grains and pores are non-uniform in size, shape and distribution is considered as porous medium. A two-dimensional random network model of micromodel with non-uniform pores has been constructed. The non-uniformity of porous model is achieved by assigning parametric distribution functions to pores throat and pores length, which was measured using ima...
متن کاملDetermination of the linear and non-linear relationships between soil erodibility factor and effective parameters on it in a mountainous watershed with severe soil erosion
Soil erodibility factor is a criterion of soil particle resistance to detachment, transport, and effects of erosivity factors (rain drop, runoff, and wind) during the soil loss processes. In this study, non-linear support vector machines (SVMs) method was used for investigating the effects of some topography, soil physical and mechanical properties on soil erodibility in a part of Northern Karo...
متن کاملEffect of slip and variable thermal boundary conditions on hydromagnetic mixed convection flow and heat transfer from a non-linearly stretching surface
The effect of partial slip and temperature dependent fluid properties on the MHD mixed convection flow from a heated, non-linearly stretching surface in the presence of radiation and non-uniform internal heat generation/absorption is investigated. The velocity of the stretching surface was assumed to vary according to power-law form. Thermal transport is analyzed for two types of non-isothermal...
متن کاملA modified variable physical properties model, for analyzing nanofluids flow and heat transfer over nonlinearly stretching sheet
In this paper, the problem of laminar nanofluid flow which results from the nonlinear stretching of a flat sheet is investigated numerically. In this paper, a modified variable physical properties model for analyzing nanofluids flow and heat transfer is introduced. In this model, the effective viscosity, density, and thermal conductivity of the solid-liquid mixture (nanofluids) which are common...
متن کاملMultiple Solutions for Slip Effects on Dissipative Magneto-Nanofluid Transport Phenomena in Porous Media: Stability Analysis
In the present paper, a numerical investigation of transport phenomena is considered in electrically-conducting nanofluid flow within a porous bed utilizing Buongiorno’s transport model and Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg fourth-fifth order method. Induced flow by non-isothermal stretching/shrinking sheet along with magnetic field impact, dissipation effect, and slip conditions at the surface are...
